Thank you for choosing HD Livery Lab!
Following these basic installation steps will help ensure the best possible results and long-term durability of your graphics.
Before You Begin
Recommended Installation Temperature
60°F - 80°F (15°C - 27°C)
For best results, install indoors or in a controlled environment whenever possible.
Do Not Install
- On dirty surfaces
- On freshly waxed vehicles
- Over ceramic coatings
- During rain or excessive humidity
- On extremely hot or cold surfaces
- In direct sunlight on hot panels
Proper installation conditions are critical for achieving maximum adhesion and long-term performance.
Tools Recommended
- Squeegee
- Masking tape
- Microfiber towel
- Isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher)
- Measuring tape
- Heat gun (optional)
Surface Preparation
Proper surface preparation is one of the most important steps in the installation process.
- Wash the installation area thoroughly.
- Remove all dirt, grease, wax, and contaminants.
- Wipe the surface with isopropyl alcohol.
- Allow the surface to dry completely before installation.
Failure to properly clean the surface may result in poor adhesion, lifting edges, or premature failure.
Test Fit
Before removing any backing paper:
- Position the graphic on the vehicle.
- Verify alignment and placement.
- Use masking tape to temporarily hold the graphic in place if needed.
- Step back and visually confirm positioning from multiple angles.
Taking a few extra minutes during this step can prevent costly mistakes later.
Applying the Graphic
- Slowly peel the backing paper away from the graphic.
- Position the graphic carefully.
- Starting from the center, use a squeegee to work outward.
- Apply firm, even pressure to remove air bubbles.
- Continue working from the center toward the edges.
Avoid stretching the vinyl during installation.
Stretching can distort the design and reduce long-term adhesion.
Transfer Tape Removal
After the graphic has been applied:
- Allow the vinyl to settle for several minutes.
- Slowly remove the transfer tape at a sharp angle.
- If any portion of the graphic begins to lift, stop immediately.
- Re-squeegee the affected area before continuing.
Patience during this step helps ensure a clean final result.
After Installation
To allow the adhesive to fully cure:
- Avoid washing the vehicle for 48 hours
- Avoid pressure washing directly on graphic edges
- Avoid applying waxes or detailing products immediately after installation
- Minimize exposure to harsh weather conditions during the curing period
Proper curing significantly improves long-term durability.
Troubleshooting
Small Air Bubbles
Small bubbles are common and often disappear naturally within a few days as the adhesive settles.
Larger Air Bubbles
Use a squeegee to carefully work trapped air toward the nearest edge.
Lifting Edges
Verify that the surface was properly cleaned and free of waxes or contaminants before installation.
If an issue persists, contact us before attempting major corrections.
Pro Tips
Take Your Time
The most common installation mistakes happen when rushing. Test-fit the graphic before removing any backing paper and verify placement from multiple angles.
Use Reference Points
Body lines, panel gaps, door edges, and trim pieces make excellent alignment guides. Measuring twice can save a lot of frustration later.
Warm Vinyl Is Happy Vinyl
If installation temperatures are on the lower end, gently warming the vinyl with a heat gun can improve flexibility and adhesion. Avoid overheating the material.
Work From The Center Out
Applying pressure from the center toward the edges helps minimize trapped air and creates a smoother finish.
Don't Chase Every Tiny Bubble
Small air bubbles are normal and often disappear naturally as the adhesive cures. Focus on larger bubbles and major imperfections first.
Let It Cure
Avoid washing the vehicle, applying waxes, or exposing the graphic to harsh conditions for at least 48 hours after installation.
When In Doubt, Ask
If something doesn't look right during installation, stop and contact us before forcing the graphic into place. We're happy to help before a small issue becomes a big one.
A Final Note
Remember: vinyl is surprisingly forgiving. Most installation issues can be corrected if caught early, so take your time, work carefully, and enjoy the process.
